The Center on Child Abuse and Neglect (CCAN) was established in 1992 in the Department of Pediatrics, College of Medicine, at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. The mission of the center is to organize the OU Health Sciences Center's efforts in the treatment and prevention of child abuse and neglect and the long-term goal was to establish the Center as a leading national, medical school based center on child maltreatment in the United States.
CCAN has recruited and retained outstanding faculty and staff. Members of the faculty are invited to present at national and international conferences on the treatment and prevention of child maltreatment. They serve on the boards of state, national, and international professional organizations in both psychology and child maltreatment. Federal, state, and local grants have funded a variety of studies including treatment outcome studies, program evaluations, and other clinical research.
Throughout its history, the Center on Child Abuse and Neglect has provided direct clinical training and supervision for practicum students from a variety of disciplines, psychology interns, and Post-Doctoral Fellows.
CCAN provides clinical services to a variety of children and families effected
by trauma or maltreatment, including parents of drug exposed infants, children
experiencing a range of traumatic events, children and adolescents with sexual
behavior problems, physically abusive parents and their children, and abused
and neglected children.
In 2003, CCAN had 23 grants and contracts, including 16 state and federal
research grants, 3 contracts to provide clinical services for maltreated
children, and 4 state and national professional education programs. In addition,
CCAN administers 3 state and national Boards, organizations, and a major
journal in the field of child abuse and neglect. The Center currently has
an interdisciplinary faculty of 19, a staff of 30, and a budget of over $2
million per year. The total funding from 1987 to 2003 is $14,240,840.
